As a designer, patternmaker, and product developer with five years of CLO3D experience and having completed many CLO courses and live training sessions over the years this is the course I wish had existed when I first started out. Learning CLO on your own is possible, but it's slow and full of unnecessary detours. After half a decade of building workflows from scratch and troubleshooting through trial and error, I can say with confidence: this course would have saved me an enormous amount of time and effort. As a proficient CLO user who has seen a lot of what's out there, I don't say that lightly. What sets this course apart is how thoughtfully it's structured. It's not just a beginner's guide, it's genuinely valuable for professional patternmakers who want to learn CLO the right way from day one, adopting smart, effective workflows rather than picking up bad habits along the way. Most importantly, you'll be learning from someone who truly understands both the digital and physical sides of garment development. That ability to translate between the two worlds is rare, and it makes the learning far more applicable to real-world production. Whether you're picking up CLO for the first time or looking to level up as a professional, this course is an investment worth making.

Why 3D?

And why CLO, specifically

3D enables you to iterate and reiterate designs without the wasted time or cost of a physical sample. Unlike sketches, 3D garments are to scale and created with patterns that can be used for physical production. You can see pattern changes updated in real time, fit multiple samples before cutting, test print layouts or fabrics, fit graded size runs and create cutting layouts, all in one place.

CLO as a software is incredibly user friendly. It is the most similar software of its kind to Adobe Illustrator, while including necessary pattern making functions, grading capabilities and 3D visualisation, but for a small fraction of the price of traditional 2D CAD software. The company is very hands-on and accessible with user support and feature requests.

Bonus Materials

CLO Pattern Pro includes x3 IDES pattern blocks valued at over A$90. These resources are used in the course teachings and can be used freely as blocks going forward.

  • Free Male T-Shirt Block

    A$30 value

The IDES Male T-Shirt Block Size L (40"/102cm chest) is a classic, relaxed t-shirt block. The CLO blocks are used to learn the basics of garment building and editing. They include custom, corresponding avatars and can be used going forward for creating your own patterns.

  • Free Female Button-Down Shirt Block PDF

    A$36 value

The IDES Female Button Down Shirt Block is a classic, dartless button down silhouette. The course includes the PDF pattern in full size range, US 0-16/AU 4-20. It comes in print-at-home, A0, projector and Adobe Illustrator formats. This pattern is used to learn more advanced garment building and detailing in the course and can be used as you wish going forward.

  • Free Female Boxy Tee Block

    A$30 value

The IDES Female Boxy Tee Block Size M (35.5"/90.3cm bust) is a boxy, relaxed silhouette. The CLO blocks are used to learn the basics of garment building and editing. They include custom, corresponding avatars and can be used going forward for creating your own patterns.

What kind of computer do you need for 3D?

3D of all types requires a powerful computer. This can sometimes be a big barrier for people when adopting 3D. Check below to see if your computer is powerful enough to handle 3D before signing up for the course.

I learned so much in this course! I really threw myself into it and finished it in a week. It's a lot, but this makes the information stick well. 3D never felt logical to me before, but this course has helped me enormously to get the hang of it. The videos are concise, but packed with information and there is a good structure. To be able to follow along properly, I occasionally had to lower the speed of a video or pause it, because there’s so much information. It’s clear that Isabel has a lot of experience in training people in CLO. She understands the learning process and explains things clearly. The highlights that are listed in each lesson are GOLD! They make it easy to quickly find information when needed. You don't have to be an expert in patternmaking or 3D to take this course, I'm just a beginner myself. If you have a basic understanding of sewing patterns, you’re good to go. I can't wait to apply the knowledge I gained in the CPP course to the patternmaking course I’m currently taking. This is really going to accelerate my learning process!

What makes this different than other CLO courses?

Most CLO courses are for designers. They teach how to use CLO like a sketching tool, with little regard for the pattern. They'll show you how to make beautiful renders and animations, but not how to do a bust adjustment.

This course is designed specifically for people who are using CLO as a fitting tool, those working in other 2D CADs or Illustrator. It's for people who need an affordable grading tool and need to export a graded PDF.

Apart from the content itself, I teach CLO for people who are craftspeople, makers, sewists- not software and gaming nerds. We are a different type of nerd. We think in paper pattern making. I am not tech savvy. I am, quite unexpectedly, a CLO expert. I tailor my teaching to people like me, who understand garment making, but might never have heard 3D software terminology.

This Course Is For You If...

  • You're a 3D beginner, looking for a start-to-finish course in CLO that focuses on pattern making and fit

  • You design and create your own sewing patterns, either by hand or in Adobe Illustrator

  • You sew and are interested in pattern hacking, grading between sizes, or testing garments before sewing

  • You've tried to learn 3D before, but it didn't quite click for your pattern or sewing process

  • You describe yourself as "hands-on" or "not a very tech-y person", but want to improve your garment making process digitally

This Course May Not Be For You If...

  • You have no experience with any of these 3 things: fit, garment making or pattern making

  • You don't use any software or digital apps for anything and aren't excited about the idea of incorporating it into your garment making process

  • You're only concerned about the visual outputs from CLO and do not care about fit or pattern accuracy

  • You want to learn advanced rendering, AI tools or animation

  • You want to learn pattern making and/or how to grade patterns (this course does not teach pattern making or grading from scratch, but rather teaches you how to translate those skills into CLO)

I’d highly recommend this CLO3D course. It’s a really detailed, methodical, inspiring and educational course that gives a great overview of the software while also exploring some more advanced techniques in depth. It really opens your eyes to what’s possible in CLO, whether that’s drafting patterns from specs, creating sewing instructions and technical visuals, or even building custom hardware details. You can also tell the course has been created by someone with a lot of real experience in pattern cutting, sewing, fitting and digital workflows, which makes the teaching feel very practical and grounded in real product development. The course is clear, easy to follow and well structured, with some great handouts included throughout. A really valuable course for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of digital garment development and the wider possibilities within CLO3D.

Meet The Instructor

Isabel, Founder of IDES Studio

Isabel Crosby

Course Creator

Hi! I'm Isabel. I launched IDES Studio in late 2022 with the goal of making it easy for individuals to adopt CLO 3D into their garment making process. Prior to that, I lived and worked in the New York City fashion industry for 11 years. I was primarily a technical designer at brands such as Billy Reid, Lululemon and Best Made Co.

From February 2019-March 2020 I worked at CLO Virtual Fashion, where I was fully trained in the software. At CLO, I trained teams at Carhartt, Macy's, Need Supply/Totokaelo, Nike and professors at Parsons and FIT. After moving to Australia and having a baby during lockdown, I taught CLO at RMIT University for 3 semesters before launching IDES. I am a CLO Creator, which is a partnership program with CLO and I am also CLO verified.

My passion is real world garment construction, with a focus on fit. I see 3D as a tool to aid in the garment development process. I teach CLO with a focus on pattern accuracy and maintaining a proper fit and pattern export. I am a self-described luddite who is not good with technology. I truly believe that CLO is the most user-friendly, robust software of its kind and if I can become proficient in it, anyone can!

Companies and Universities where I've taught CLO

IDES Studio respectfully acknowledges the Bunurong people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which it operates. IDES respects the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country and pays respect to elders past, present and emerging.
